Thai opposition leader and prime ministerial candidate, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut was seen casting his ballot in Bangkok on Sunday as the country’s high-stakes general election kicked off.
“No matter what is in people’s minds, nationalism or anything else, I think the election result today will decide how our country is going to be in the future,” Ruengpanyawut told the press after voting.
“Let it be on the people’s voice. And I believe in the people’s voice,” he added.
More than 50 political parties are contesting the election, although analysts say only three, the People’s Party, Bhumjaithai Party and Pheu Thai, have the nationwide organisation and voter base needed to compete for power.
The contest is widely seen as a showdown between the reformist opposition People’s Party and the conservative, military-aligned Bhumjaithai Party, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
With all 500 seats in the House of Representatives up for grabs, local media reports suggest no single party is expected to secure an outright majority, raising the likelihood of protracted coalition negotiations.
Polling stations opened at 08:00 local time and closed at 17:00.
