‘What’s more dangerous than a warship is the weapon that sinks it’ – Khamenei warns US as talks continue in Geneva

Ali Khamenei issued a stark warning to the United States on Tuesday, declaring that “what is more dangerous than a warship is the weapon that can send that warship to the bottom of the sea” – a pointed remark widely interpreted as a veiled threat against the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed to the region just over a week ago.

During a televised address, Khamenei suggested that military might has its limits, adding that “even the strongest army in the world can sometimes receive a blow so hard that it cannot recover.”

He struck a defiant tone regarding long-standing tensions, stating, “For 47 years, the United States has not been able to eliminate the Islamic Republic. And I say, you will not be able to do so.”

Beyond the military rhetoric, the Supreme Leader cautioned against premature assumptions regarding the outcome of ongoing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington.

“Determining the results of the Iran-US talks in advance is a wrong and foolish act,” he noted. “Why should we predetermine that they must lead to a specific agreement?”

Khamenei also touched upon the internal unrest following recent nationwide protests. “The defenders of security, the bystanders, and even those who walked a few steps with the agitators – they are our children. We pray for mercy and forgiveness for them.”

These statements coincide with a second round of indirect US-Iranian negotiations currently underway in Geneva.

Mediated by Oman, the talks have been described by Tehran as a ‘good start,’ with Iranian officials indicating that discussions are primarily focused on technical nuclear matters and economic issues, while US President Donald Trump has said, “I think they want to make a deal. I don’t think they want the consequences of not making a deal.”
