The UK opposition said Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s ‘authority is gone’ and ‘his government is starting to collapse’ during a debate in the House of Commons on Monday.

“It was the Prime Minister who made the decision to appoint the best friend of the world’s most notorious paedophile to be his Majesty’s ambassador in Washington,” said Neil O’Brien, UK Shadow Minister for Policy Renewal. “And the PM did this despite knowing that Mandelson had stayed in Epstein’s house while he was in jail for child prostitution.”
“The problem is not the structures or the processes. The information was there. The warnings were there. The problem is that the Prime Minister had all that before him and yet chose to ignore it. He cannot keep blaming others. He cannot blame the process. He must start taking personal responsibility,” O’Brien went on.

Darren Jones, UK Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, defended the government: “Mr Speaker, we have all been appalled at Jeffrey Epstein’s disgusting crimes and Peter Mandelson’s despicable behaviour. It is utterly contrary to what the Prime Minister stands for and the values at the heart of this government. We are resolute in our commitment to fighting men’s violence against women and girls and supporting their victims.”
Starmer came under further pressure to quit on Monday, after losing both his chief of staff and director of communications over the ongoing Epstein row. His party leader in Scotland, Anas Sarwar, also called for him to resign. Later in the day, a number of key cabinet colleagues voiced their support for the leader, ahead of a showdown with MPs on Monday night.

Starmer has faced mounting questions over how much he knew about his former US ambassador Lord Mandelson’s relationship with the late paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein – after further revelations emerged last week. Mandelson has denied wrongdoing while Starmer has said he regretted the appointment – but insisted he was lied to.
