‘Unjustified, dangerous military intervention’ – Sanchez denounces US-Israel strikes on Iran, calls for de-escalation

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Sunday condemned the joint US and Israeli military operations in Iran, calling it a violation of international law and urging immediate de-escalation.

“Today, more than ever, it is essential to remember that one can be against a hateful regime, as the whole of Spanish society is, like the Iranian regime, and at the same time be against an unjustified, dangerous military intervention,” he said, speaking at the Mobile World Capital Barcelona.

The Prime Minister emphasised that any war launched without authorisation from the US Congress or the United Nations Security Council undermines international norms.

He called for immediate de-escalation, full respect for international law and an urgent return to dialogue, insisting that diplomacy must prevail over ‘the devastation of weapons.’

“That’s where Spain will be and that’s where I believe the whole of the European Union should be,” Sanchez stressed.

Tensions escalated in the Middle East this week after the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran, with President Donald Trump vowing to “raze their missile industry to the ground”. Tehran responded with a series of attacks targeting Israel and US military bases in the Gulf.

On Sunday, Iranian state television confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in strikes carried out on Saturday. The Supreme Leader, who had ruled since 1989, held ultimate authority over Iran’s political, military and religious institutions.

Iranian officials warned that Khamenei’s killing would mark a turning point, with the Revolutionary Guard vowing retaliation and declaring that “this great crime will not go unpunished.”

The developments follow three recent rounds of nuclear talks between Iranian and American officials, one held in Muscat and two in Geneva.
