French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to call out the US and Israel for attack on ‘gas facilities and civilian infrastructure’ as he arrived at the European Council on Thursday.
It came after Israel hit Iran’s South Pars gas facility, and Iran responded with a strike on a major liquefied natural gas export facility in Qatar, with global oil and natural gas prices surging.
“I had the opportunity to speak with the Emir of Qatar, who has been directly affected, and the gas production capacities have been hit,” said Macron. “Several other Gulf countries were hit for the first time on their production capacity, in the same way that Iran was hit in the morning.”
“This escalation is reckless. I was then able to speak with President Trump yesterday. and he, during the night, himself called for a halt to all these bombings and attacks on civilian infrastructure, gas, oil, but also water. And I want to say here, we support the idea of a moratorium on the infrastructure civilians, the civilian people in this conflict, and a rapid de-escalation,” he added.
The US and Israel have denied attacking civilian infrastructure. Trump later denied his country was involved in the South Pars strike: “Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack.”
He added: “NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar – In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before.”
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region. The conflict soon widened to Israel and Hezbollah trading strikes across the border with Lebanon too.
