Kerala Floods Turn Deadly
At least 26 people have died after days of torrential rain battered the southern Indian state of Kerala, with four others still missing as floodwaters continue to swamp low-lying communities.
Footage filmed in Alappuzha on Wednesday shows vehicles inching through submerged streets as residents wade through knee-deep water. Police and local volunteers clear debris from flooded roads, while homes, shops and businesses remain inundated.
“It’s been five days now since the flooding started. The water reached full capacity three days ago, and now it’s overflowing. The water level is above my knees in the kitchen,” said local resident Visu.
“Food is a significant issue now. Everyone has gone to the camp, but we didn’t go. I am unsure if we should go or not,” he added.
Communities Remain Underwater
Another resident, Siju, said the slow rise in water levels made conditions less dangerous than in areas at risk of landslides.
“The main thing is that the main river here is not big enough to hold the water. Because there is a lot of mud and dirt there. We should remove those and that will probably help to alleviate some of the issues. That way it can hold more water and the flooding situation can be reduced,” he said.
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan said 11 people had been injured and four remained missing in rain-related incidents.
He added that more than 27,000 people had been displaced and were sheltering in 462 relief camps, while nearly 1,900 hectares of farmland had been damaged.
Thousands Seek Shelter
The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts across parts of Kerala and forecast widespread rain across the state and neighbouring southern regions through August 11.
Flooding and landslides have hit several districts since Saturday. Conditions have begun to improve in some areas, but many low-lying communities remain under water.
