Trump’s Media Makeover: Bringing Podcasts and Non-Legacy Media to the Forefront
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Donald Trump, the president-elect of the United States, has announced plans to change the media landscape with fairer press briefings and the inclusion of non-legacy media.

This strategy, led by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, aims to diversify the voices in the White House press room.

Trump’s Criticism of Traditional Media

Throughout his political career, Trump has relentlessly criticized mainstream media, labeling them ‘fake news’ and ‘enemies of the people.’ His confrontational approach has drawn sharp reactions, with journalist Chris Wallace describing it as ‘the most direct sustained assault on freedom of the press in history.’ Trump’s rhetoric has often targeted influential outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post, accusing them of ideological bias and unfair treatment.

This antagonistic relationship has significantly impacted the credibility of traditional media. Trump’s attacks have resonated with his supporters, fostering widespread skepticism about mainstream journalism. The decline in trust has coincided with a rise in alternative platforms, many of which align with Trump’s perspectives and appeal to his voter base.

Impact on Media Credibility and Rise of Alternative Media

A Gallup poll in October revealed that only 31% of Americans trust the accuracy of news reporting, reflecting a sharp decline in confidence in traditional media. This skepticism has fueled the growth of right-leaning alternative media outlets and independent creators. Platforms like X, Gab, Parler, and podcasts such as Joe Rogan’s have gained prominence, offering audiences news and commentary outside the traditional media framework, according to Reuters Institute.

Trump’s vocal support for alternative media has amplified their reach. These platforms often prioritize direct, unfiltered communication, resonating with a public increasingly dissatisfied with legacy outlets.

Changes to Press Briefings

Trump’s plan includes significant changes to White House press briefings. The new administration intends to invite independent media personalities to these briefings, providing a platform for voices that have been less represented by mainstream outlets.

Figures like Joe Rogan and Megyn Kelly, known for their large followings, are expected to be part of this strategy. Podcast host Megyn Kelly, who Trump had called ‘nasty’ amid a former feud during Trump’s 2016 run, has recently even delivered Trump’s closing message on his behalf at his campaign.

Policy Changes and Press Freedom Concerns

Trump’s media strategy extends beyond press briefings. He plans to appoint Brendan Carr as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Carr, known for his conservative stance, has pledged to tackle perceived bias in TV broadcasting and tech companies. His approach could reshape media regulations, with an emphasis on addressing alleged censorship by tech giants.

Critics, however, warn that these policies may undermine press freedom. They argue that Trump’s history of targeting traditional outlets and his influence over media regulation could weaken the press’s watchdog role. By aligning regulatory power with his political goals, Trump risks further polarizing the media landscape.

Looking Ahead

Donald Trump’s plan for the media scene in America represents a shift from traditional norms. By including independent media personalities and addressing the role of mainstream media, Trump aims to create a more diverse media landscape.

With Karoline Leavitt leading this effort, the future of presidential communication may become more inclusive and reflective of changing media consumption habits.
