The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming proportions, with an escalating number of amputees among its population, particularly children.
Recent accounts from aid workers and reports from international organizations paint a grim picture of resilience amidst devastation, as thousands endure life-changing injuries from ongoing violence.
The Scale of the Crisis
Gaza now bears the tragic distinction of housing the largest cohort of child amputees in modern history. A report from the United Nations reveals that an estimated 10 children lose one or both legs daily due to airstrikes, shelling, and explosive remnants of war. These injuries leave lifelong physical and psychological scars on a generation already grappling with profound adversity.

Lisa Doughten, Director of the Finance and Partnerships Division of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), emphasized the dire situation: “The widespread suffering persists while the humanitarian situation worsens.” She further warned that legislative measures to halt UNRWA’s operations could decimate the fragile support system for Palestinians, exacerbating an already dire scenario.
Stories of Resilience Amidst Tragedy
Gilbert Goh from Love Aid Singapore, a humanitarian aid organisation, recently shared insights into his encounters with young amputees from Gaza. During his visit to Cairo, where medical teams transport some of the injured for treatment, Goh met a young woman who had lost both her legs during a bombardment. Despite her circumstances, her optimism and resilience deeply impressed him. “She was very cheerful,” he recounted, noting her ability to maintain a positive demeanor even while confined to a hospital bed.

Such stories, while inspiring, underscore the harsh reality faced by amputees in Gaza. Many young survivors display remarkable strength, but their challenges remain immense. They face limited access to rehabilitation services, prosthetics, and long-term care, further compounded by the psychological toll of their injuries.
Systemic Challenges in Addressing the Crisis
The blockade imposed on Gaza has severely hindered the delivery of medical aid and rehabilitation services. Once, injured civilians were transported to neighboring countries like Egypt and Qatar, and even Malaysia for treatment. However, border closures and restricted movement now limit such possibilities, leaving many without essential medical care.

Healthcare facilities within Gaza are under immense strain. Years of conflict and resource limitations have left hospitals ill-equipped to handle the rising number of amputations. A lack of surgical supplies, prosthetic devices, and trained personnel exacerbates the crisis, making comprehensive care an elusive goal.
Women and Children Disproportionately Affected
The crisis in Gaza disproportionately impacts women and children. Beyond the staggering number of child amputees, women face significantly higher maternal mortality rates.

According to the UN, women in Gaza are three times more likely to miscarry or die from childbirth-related complications, highlighting the systemic collapse of healthcare services.
International Response and the Path Forward
Despite the gravity of the situation, international responses remain insufficient. Humanitarian aid organizations like UNRWA have provided vital support, but threats to their operations could further destabilize Gaza’s fragile healthcare system. Lisa Doughten warned that halting UNRWA’s activities would violate international law and deprive millions of Palestinians of essential services. However, as of now, the Israeli occupation has officially banned UNRWA, despite international backlash.

Efforts to address the amputee crisis must include increased funding for healthcare infrastructure, the removal of barriers to medical aid, and the establishment of comprehensive rehabilitation programs. Advocacy for the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law is equally crucial to prevent further injuries and deaths.
A Call for Global Action
The plight of Gaza’s amputees is a stark reminder of the human cost of prolonged conflict. While stories of resilience offer glimmers of hope, the international community must act decisively to address the root causes of this crisis. As Doughten aptly stated, “We cannot claim ignorance to what is happening — nor can we afford to look away.”
Without concerted global efforts, the situation will only deteriorate, leaving more lives irreparably altered. It is a moral imperative to support the people of Gaza, ensuring they receive the care, dignity, and protection they desperately need.
