Historic Wimbledon Achievement

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr welcomed tennis star Alex Eala to Malacañang Palace on Monday, presenting her with a Presidential Citation after her historic Wimbledon run, where she became the first Filipino singles player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

Footage shows Marcos and Eala entering the ceremonial hall before the president presents the 21-year-old with the citation. Eala later gives Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos tennis caps and signed tennis balls.

“You have brought such pride to the Philippines, to the Filipinos,” Marcos told Eala. “Not only because of your success, but also because of the grace with which you handled that success.”

President Praises Eala

The president praised Eala’s professionalism and determination, saying her attitude reflected “the greatest, best qualities of Filipinos.”

“The hospitals around the world stopped when you played,” Marcos said. “Everywhere around the world, we have been watching you […] We have been so proud of you.”

Marcos then admitted he was a devoted fan.

“I’m a fan, so I’m gushing, okay? I’m sorry […] I’m a real fan of yours.”

Eala thanked the president for the recognition, saying she had never imagined being honoured at Malacañang Palace.

“I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that I would be having dinner here at Malacanang Palace next to you and be receiving such kind and genuine words,” she said. “I feel like all the hard work that I’ve done is seen.”

Victory For Filipinos

She dedicated her Wimbledon achievement to the Filipino people.

“I’m so grateful that I am able to share my triumphs, most especially my recent run at Wimbledon, with the country,” Eala said. “As we say, this is a victory for all of us.”

Eala returned home after a breakthrough Wimbledon campaign in which she stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek in the third round before losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to Jasmine Paolini in the last 16.

The run lifted Eala four places to a career-high world No. 28, the highest singles ranking achieved by a Filipino tennis player.
