Iran Rejects US Control

Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s Central Headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya said that Tehran will not allow US interference in the management of the Strait of Hormuz, on Monday.

“We do not and will not allow the United States to interfere in the management of the Strait of Hormuz under any circumstances,” he stated, accusing Washington of jeopardising security in the region.

Zolfaghari added that Iran’s army will confront any “disruption or insecurity to the transit of commercial ships and oil tankers caused by the aggressor and pirate US army outside Iran’s designated routes and without the permission of the armed forces.”

Trump Announces Strait Plans

It comes after US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social that the US will take control of the strategic waterway, reimpose a naval blockade and charge a 20% fee on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

“The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for any and all costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security to this very volatile section of the World,” he wrote.

It comes amid renewed hostilities between the US and Iran despite a interim ceasefire agreement reached last month.

Rising US-Iran Tensions

On June 17, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a ceasefire and opening negotiations for a final agreement. Since then, both sides have accused each other of violating the deal.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran. Tehran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and named his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor.
