A Russian passenger on the Celestyal Journey cruise ship described being stranded in Doha on Thursday amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Around two hundred Russian tourists are on board the ship, which was on a tour of the Gulf – and are now unable to leave following restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz and the country’s airspace.
“On February 28, while we were walking in Doha, we heard a warning on our mobile phones telling us that we needed to take shelter. A few minutes later, there were explosions. We saw missiles attacking in the sky, after which we immediately got on a bus and went to the ship,” Valeria explained.
“There were so many missiles! They were being blown up and shot down above our heads. It was the most terrifying day,” she revealed.
“The atmosphere on board is calm, we are fed well, and there are no restrictions. <…> On March 4, we were permitted to leave the port and explore the city of Doha, as many passengers needed to purchase medicine,” she added.
The group are in contact with the Russian Embassy in Qatar. According to the statement from the Russian diplomatic mission, they are working with the Qatari authorities to arrange accommodation for the passengers in Doha’s hotels.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region.
According to the most recent figures, Iranian media reported over 1200 dead, with six deaths of military personnel admitted by the US side.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday. It comes after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians.
