Hundreds of Muslims gathered at the iconic Sultan Mosque in Singapore’s district of Kampong Glam on Saturday, to mark the start of Eid al-Fitr, known locally as Hari Raya.

Footage shows worshippers arriving at dawn, as well as performing prayers and exchanging greetings to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

“The sense of unity here and there’s always been the same, or it has either been growing as well. That’s one thing that never changes over here, even after so many things that have happened around the world,” mosque staff member Jannah shared.

Vice Chairman Puzi explained the historic Sultan Mosque continues to play a key role in promoting unity and understanding.

“The mosque was built in 1819, and we hope the spirit of Ramadan continues – compassion, forgiveness and unity,” he said, adding that the visitors from around the world are welcomed to learn about the local community.

Puzi added maintaining relevance in a diverse society is essential for the mosque’s future.

“Our congregants come from different backgrounds and countries,” he said. “We aim to provide a space where everyone can worship peacefully and strengthen unity.”

Worshipper Kaz said the celebration was also an opportunity to connect with new people. “For me, coming here is about experiencing new cultures and meeting new people,” he said. “It’s a special way to spend Eid.”
