New Ceasefire Mechanism

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed on Monday that an ‘innovative’ mechanism has been established to ensure a permanent cessation of hostilities with the United States.

Baqaei’s remarks were made in Burgenstock, Switzerland which is hosting talks between Tehran and Washington on outstanding issues as the sides move toward a final agreement. The discussions are set to continue for 60 days, according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the parties.

“Regarding Clause 1 of the Memorandum of Understanding, a mechanism was envisaged to monitor a lasting cessation of hostilities. In the presence of the mediators, this innovative mechanism was established, named the ‘De-confliction Cell’, to ensure that the ceasefire in Lebanon remains stable,” Baqaei explained.

“Concerning the issue of safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz, it was agreed that a mechanism would be put in place,” he added, noting the ‘significance’ of the move.

Switzerland Peace Talks

Peace talks between Iran and the United States, with Pakistan and Qatar acting as mediators, kicked off in separate buildings at the venue.

Tehran is represented by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Vice President JD Vance headed the US delegation with White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner taking part in the Qatar-Pakistan mediated talks.

The ongoing discussions are expected to address outstanding issues including a regional ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.

MoU Signed Agreement

Following mediation efforts, US President Donald Trump officially signed the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Palace of Versailles in France on June 17.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed it later before Pakistani Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, also inked the MoU in Islamabad.

The 14-item MoU mandates de-escalation with both sides engaging in broader talks within a 60-day timeline, The agreement calls for Iran to re-open the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for this period. Washington is also required to immediately begin the gradual lifting of its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
