Iran Delays Talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has not decided whether to resume negotiations with Washington, stressing that messages exchanged through intermediaries do not amount to talks.

His remarks were published on Saturday, although the exact date and location of the interview could not be independently verified.

“The mediators – namely, Qatar and Pakistan – are exchanging messages and remain in contact with us, but this does not constitute negotiations. No decision has yet been made to resume negotiations with the United States,” Araghchi said.

He also rejected suggestions that the Islamabad memorandum established a 60-day ceasefire, saying the agreement was intended to end the war and provide a 60-day window for negotiations towards a final deal.

Ceasefire Dispute Continues

Araghchi also accused Washington of having ‘violated that memorandum’, saying fighting subsequently resumed.

Furthermore, he said negotiations with Oman over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz were continuing and were unrelated to any potential talks with the United States.

The discussions focus on establishing new shipping routes through the waterway, with Araghchi saying the previous routes are ‘no longer functional’. Iranian and Omani specialists, alongside military experts, are working on a temporary route that could later become permanent.

Hormuz Route Talks

Araghchi stressed that negotiations over the maritime route and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are ‘two separate issues’, saying any reopening would depend on the United States meeting other conditions set by Tehran.

The Islamabad memorandum between Iran and the United States was agreed in June with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, setting out an end to hostilities and a 60-day period for negotiations towards a final agreement.

Talks have since stalled, with Tehran and Washington accusing each other of violating the agreement as disputes continue over maritime security and transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
