On 2 December, 2024, authorities captured and killed a bear in Japan’s Akita Prefecture after it caused a two-day rampage inside a local supermarket. The bear, which had entered the store early Saturday morning, attacked a 47-year-old employee, causing non-life-threatening facial injuries.

Despite no customers being in the store at the time, the bear’s prolonged stay led to significant damage to the supermarket’s meat department. The authorities’ use of traps and honey-laced food eventually led to its capture.

The last fiscal year alone saw hunters kill approximately 9,097 bears, a dramatic increase from previous years.
