Meta is doubling down on a new vision for artificial intelligence. On 30 July, CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined the company’s bold plans to create what he calls “personal superintelligence”—an AI model designed to work closely with individuals to support their daily lives, creativity, and goals, rather than automate them out of existence.

The announcement, which came just before Meta’s Q2 earnings call, signals a strategic shift in direction as the AI race intensifies.
Building Meta Superintelligence Labs
Meta has invested heavily in this initiative, establishing a new elite unit known as Meta Superintelligence Labs. The tech giant recently poured $14.3 billion into Scale AI, a data-labeling firm, and brought on its CEO Alexandr Wang to spearhead AI development efforts.

The company has also poached top researchers from major AI rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic.
Personalised AI Through Wearables
While many tech companies focus on AI to automate jobs or run large systems, Meta wants to make AI part of people’s everyday routines. The plan involves developing smart glasses and wearables that can see and hear the world around users—responding to their needs in real time.

Zuckerberg described this personal AI assistant as one that helps people set and achieve personal goals, nurture relationships, and explore new ideas. He emphasized a future where AI complements, not replaces, human intelligence.
Open Source No Longer a Guarantee
Although Meta previously promoted open-source AI, Zuckerberg’s latest comments suggest the company may withhold future models due to safety concerns.

Meta insists it remains committed to transparency, but growing capabilities may push it toward more closed development practices. This includes pausing its next open-source model, Llama Behemoth, in favor of more controlled alternatives.
Hardware as the New Frontier
Meta’s personal superintelligence won’t just live in the cloud. Instead, the company is focusing on augmented reality devices, such as its Ray-Ban smart glasses and an upcoming model codenamed Orion.

These will serve as the first hardware platforms for the AI experience, bringing user interaction and AI assistance closer than ever before.
Zuckerberg believes wearables could eventually replace smartphones, becoming the main access point for computing and AI support.
A Decisive Moment for AI’s Future
Zuckerberg framed the coming years as a critical window in defining the role AI will play in society. While Meta has previously been focused on the metaverse, it now appears to view personalized AI as the more immediate and transformative path forward.
The company’s multi-billion-dollar bet suggests a belief that AI should empower individuals—not control or replace them. Whether Meta’s approach sets the tone for the future of AI, however, remains to be seen.
