Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on the US to show ‘common sense’ amid concerns about a ‘naval blockade’ of Cuba during a meeting with his counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in Moscow on Wednesday.

“Together with the majority of the global community members, we urge the United States to show common sense and a responsible approach and to refrain from plans of a naval blockade of the ‘Island of Freedom,'” he said.

Lavrov also stressed that Moscow ‘categorically’ rejected the ‘contrived accusations’ that Russian-Cuban co-operation allegedly posed a “threat to the interests of the United States or anyone else.”

“I want to once again note the absolute unacceptability of the United States’ actions, which, as you just reminded us, issued a special order stating that Cuba poses a threat to the national interests of the United States. Yet, in this same order, it was stated that this threat is exacerbated by your cooperation with us, with Russia, which was labelled in this order as a hostile and malevolent state,” he added.

Meanwhile, Parrilla stated that the situation in Cuba was “deteriorating rapidly and poses a major threat to the country.”

“Today, the Cuban people are suffering greatly from great difficulties and deprivation, but they are fully aware of the underlying causes of these economic hardships and are standing together in unity,” he continued.

The Cuban foreign minister also claimed that the US was “engaging in new practices of theft, interference, violation of international law, and disregard for the UN.”

“[It’s] posing a threat to the world order, the principles of UN multilateralism, and, in general, a threat to the international and regional sovereignty of all countries without exception,” Parrilla added.

The island is facing a severe energy crisis after Trump signed an executive order warning of “additional tariffs” on any country that “directly or indirectly supplies oil to Cuba.” Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel accused the US government of ‘asphyxiating the country.’
