A Russian Emergency Ministry aircraft landed at Lankaran International Airport in Azerbaijan on Thursday with aid and medicine for onward transfer to Iran.
Footage shows ministry and airport employees standing by the aircraft.
“The IL-76 aircraft brought more than 13 tonnes of medicines from Moscow. They will be handed over to authorised representatives of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the agency’s statement read.
Earlier, Azerbaijan sent humanitarian aid to Iran on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev. The shipment included approximately 30 tonnes of food and almost 2 tonnes of medicine.
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf.
On Monday, Donald Trump suggested it could be over ‘very soon’ but did not set a deadline. According to the most recent figures, the Iranian Red Crescent reported over 1300 dead, with eight deaths of military personnel admitted by the US side.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on the first day. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected as his successor on Sunday.
The US and Israeli military action came after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians.
It has seen soaring worldwide energy prices, with crude over $100 a barrel and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – which handles 20 per cent of global oil traffic.
