Russian Advances Claimed
Russian servicemen were seen operating in the Ukraine conflict zone as the Defence Ministry reported on Saturday that Kharkov region’s Shiykovka and Vasilevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) had come under their control.

Drone footage shows smoke rising above Vasilevka, as well as Russian soldiers unfurling the national flag in Shiykovka. The exact date of the footage published by Russian Defence Ministry cannot be independently verified.
Military Operations Continue
“During aerial reconnaissance, the enemy’s concealed positions and approaching reserves were detected in good time and subsequently destroyed by unmanned aerial vehicle crews and the group’s artillery units. The Ukrainian Armed Forces suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment,” the department’s statement read.
The Ukrainian side had not commented on the Russian Defence Ministry’s claims at the time of publication.
Conflict Background Explained
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
