Reform Demands Election

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for an immediate general election on Monday after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would resign.

“What is going on here, frankly, is reminiscent of a banana republic that has totally devalued the very process of general elections and democracy. We at Reform demand a general election,” Farage said.

“Britain is broken. Six prime ministers in seven years should convince you of that fact. We are ready for a general election, and I suspect many of you, too, are ready for a general election,” he added.

Starmer Announces Exit

Starmer announced his decision earlier on Monday, after party officials said there was growing agreement inside Labour that he should step aside. He said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen, to allow an orderly transition.

In his resignation statement, Starmer said he had informed the King and would ask Labour’s National Executive Committee to begin the leadership contest. Nominations are expected to open in July, with a new leader in place before Parliament returns in September.

Starmer said he accepted the party’s judgment ‘with good grace’ and insisted the decision had been made in the national interest.

His position had been weakened by a decisive by-election win for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is seen as a potential contender and has gained momentum within parts of the party.

Trump Weighs In

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump posted on social media: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!”

Mounting Political Pressure

Starmer’s short time in office has been battered by repeated government U-turns and political scandals, including the fallout over his former US ambassador’s links to Jeffrey Epstein, immigration protests after the Belfast knife attack, the ‘two-tier’ policing row after the murder of Henry Nowak, and other controversies.
