Floodwaters Hit Communities
Flash floods tore through communities in Thailand’s northern Nan province from Tuesday night into Wednesday, swamping homes and cutting major roads after more than 110mm of rain fell overnight in parts of Pua district.
Footage shows floodwaters crashing through Ban Prang village and a river overflowing its banks. Rescue personnel can be seen helping residents manoeuvre through the floodwaters using boats and, in some cases, ropes to fight the raging current.
Nan’s disaster authorities said runoff and overflowing waterways flooded several communities in Pua District. Rescue teams were helping residents evacuate as officials assessed the damage.
Roads Severely Damaged
Three major highway points were reported impassable, affecting Highways 101, 1371 and 1256. A bridge on the route between Pua and Doi Phu Kha National Park was washed away, while landslides blocked other roads across the district.
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation sent an emergency mobile alert to people in Pua, urging residents in vulnerable areas to move belongings to higher ground and relocate those needing assistance.
More Rain Expected
The Thai Meteorological Department forecast further very heavy rain in Nan on Wednesday, warning that further downpours could trigger flash floods, overflowing waterways and landslides. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected across parts of northern Thailand through August 21.
