US Saudi Nuclear Deal
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked why Saudi Arabia was getting a civilian nuclear deal – but Iran wasn’t – during her briefing in DC on Thursday.
“This agreement is still being worked out it will eventually hopefully be finalised with the condition that the president spoke about this morning. But this agreement in particular as it’s been discussed thus far does give priority access for American companies and the Saudi nuclear energy programme which will ultimately benefit American industry workers and supply chains,” she said.
Trump Discusses Conditions
She was also asked if Trump had spoke with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the apparent new caveat – that the deal was ‘totally subject’ to Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords.
“As you know, the President just put out this statement a few hours ago. I don’t believe he’s had a call with MBS in the hours since. However, this is something that he has raised in previous conversations and has also said many times in the past,” she said.
The Abraham Accords are the series of agreements to normalise relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Saudi Arabia has not commented on that aspect of the plan. It has previously said it will not join without the creation of a Palestinian state.
Saudi Nuclear Programme
The US and Saudi Arabia signed the deal allowing the Gulf nation to develop a civilian nuclear programme this week, which Washington said would give ‘great access’ for US firms.
