Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte attended a Holy Mass at San Pedro Cathedral in Davao City on Wednesday, marking the first anniversary of the arrest of her father and former president Rodrigo Duterte on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant.
“Today, we commemorate the first anniversary of an event that tested our democracy and the principles of due process and the rule of law,” she said in a separate video address.
“The extraordinary rendition, or kidnapping, of former President Rodrigo Duterte is a stark reminder that the law should never be used as a weapon for political or personal interests. The violation of an individual’s rights through irregular processes is not just an attack on justice; it is a challenge to our national sovereignty,” she continued.
The Vice President also emphasised that the incident was more than a personal family tragedy, framing it as a violation of Philippine independence.
“This anniversary is a call for all of us to remain vigilant. Our institutions must remain free, honest, and firm against any attempt to pervert justice. No Filipino should be denied the protection of our Constitution,” she stated.
“Together, let us uphold a Philippines where the law is a shield of justice and our sovereignty is respected by all. Let us continue to fight for the dignity of our nation,” she added.
Former Philippine president, Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested on March 11, 2025, upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong and was flown to The Hague, Netherlands, that same evening.
Duterte is suspected of crimes against humanity, specifically murder and attempted murder, allegedly committed in the Philippines between 1 November 1, 2011 and March 16, 2019, in the context of his bloody ‘war on drugs’ during his tenures as Mayor of Davao and subsequently as President.
The Chamber is currently deliberating whether to confirm the charges against Duterte. A decision is expected within 60 days of the conclusion of the confirmation hearings.
