Displaced families living in the Goz Alsalam camp in the Kosti area of Sudan described worsening conditions due to serious aid shortages amid the ongoing conflict.

Footage on Thursday shows the makeshift tents for living quarters, as well as a medical tent offering basic health services.

“We came here expecting to find an organisation that could offer some assistance, but there is nothing. We have nothing to eat now. Look at my hand, I cut it while collecting firewood for cooking,” revealed Shakra Hassan, a displaced woman at the camp.

“These are my sons and my grandchildren. We stay here with absolutely nothing, just waiting. If people have something to share, we take it. If they have nothing, we wait to see what God has in store for us,” another displaced woman, Fatima, added.

Earlier, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that “displacement has surged in recent days across South Kordofan State”, confirming that “more than 15,000 people have fled to White Nile State since late October.”

According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the crisis in Sudan has severely disrupted essential services and infrastructure. Health systems have collapsed in many areas, education has ground to a halt, and food insecurity has worsened dramatically due to the destruction of agricultural production and broken supply chains.

Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023, has killed over 20,000 people and injured at least 33,000 others, according to UN figures. Nearly 12 million people have been displaced, and more than 25.6 million Sudanese are facing acute food insecurity.
