Donald Trump said ‘other countries’ should ‘come and help us protect’ the Strait of Hormuz, during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

“We are talking to other countries about working with us for the policing of the strait, and I think we’re getting a good response. If we do, that’s great, and if we don’t, that’s great, too. But remember, like as an example of many cases in NATO countries, we’re always there for NATO; we’re helping them with Ukraine, as many it’s got a notion in between us. It doesn’t affect us, but we’ve helped them,” he said.

Asked which countries had agreed to help, he added: “I can’t say yet. It’s a little early. They were contacted today and last night, but we’ve had some positive responses. We had a few that would rather not get involved.”

Asked specifically if one was China, he replied: “I don’t want to tell you about that. I mean, I can’t really say for sure, but China’s an interesting case study.”

The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region. It has seen soaring worldwide energy prices and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – which handles 20 per cent of global oil traffic. Iran said it would stop tankers which specifically benefited the US and its allies.
