In a moment filled with warmth and curiosity, on 20 November, 2024, Jyoti Amge, the world’s shortest woman, met Rumeysa Gelgi, the world’s tallest woman, for an elegant afternoon tea at The Savoy Hotel in London.

Their first ever meeting was part of the 20th Guinness World Records Day, a fitting occasion to celebrate extraordinary achievements and human diversity.

A Meeting of Remarkable Opposites

Jyoti Amge, a 30-year-old from Nagpur, India, stands at just 62.8 cm (2 ft 0.7 in) due to primordial dwarfism. Despite her small stature, Amge has made a big impact, appearing in international TV shows like American Horror Story and using her platform to spread messages of self-acceptance. ‘I’m delighted that I’ve met Rumeysa,’ Amge shared about the event.

Rumeysa Gelgi, a 27-year-old from Turkey, towers at 215.16 cm (7 ft 0.7 in). She lives with Weaver Syndrome, a condition causing rapid growth and other medical challenges. Gelgi has turned her height into a symbol of advocacy, raising awareness about rare disorders and promoting accessibility for people with disabilities. She expressed gratitude for the meeting, saying, ‘Meeting Jyoti for the first time was wonderful.’

Tea at The Savoy

The Savoy Hotel, renowned for its luxury and charm, set the perfect stage for this unique encounter. Amid the grandeur, Amge and Gelgi exchanged stories, laughed over shared challenges, and took lots of photos for the occassion. In the background, parents of both women were present, enjoying the meeting alongside.

The sight of the two together—Amge seated comfortably and Gelgi adjusting to the space with her wheelchair—sparked awe and admiration from onlookers. Gelgi commented on the profound connection they shared, despite their vastly different lives: ‘We might look opposite but we have a lot in common.’

Beyond the Records

While their physical differences brought them global attention, their lives reflect universal struggles and triumphs. Amge has worked tirelessly to normalize conditions like hers, showing that being different can also mean being extraordinary.

Gelgi, despite mobility challenges, has turned her platform into an educational tool, reminding people of the importance of inclusion and compassion.

Both women have previously highlighted the emotional toll of constant public attention. ‘Everywhere I go, people want to take pictures,’ said Amge.

‘I’ve learned to turn it into something positive.’ Additionally, Gelgi said, ‘We are aiming to inspire people with visible differences to find the courage to show themselves.’

A Global Celebration

Guinness World Records Day, established in 2004, celebrates individuals who push boundaries and redefine possibilities. The meeting of Amge and Gelgi symbolized the heart of the event: celebrating the diversity of human experience while emphasizing shared humanity.

The images of the two sharing tea have gone viral, captivating audiences worldwide.

Fans and viewers have described the meeting as ‘wholesome,’ and ‘beautiful.’

Leaving a Legacy

Amge and Gelgi’s meeting serves as a poignant reminder that our unique traits can bring us together rather than set us apart. As they parted ways, they left a message that resonated far beyond the walls of The Savoy: celebrating our differences is a step toward embracing our shared humanity.

Their afternoon tea was not just a Guinness World Records event; it was a heartwarming moment that highlighted the power of connection, no matter how different we may appear.
