Black rain! – Cars, beaches covered after Ukrainian drone attack on petroleum refinery in southern Russia
An astonishing ‘black rain’ – or ‘oil rain’ – phenomenon was seen on Thursday, with stains, drips and streaks covering cars and beaches on the Black Sea.
Drone Attack Impact
It came following this week’s Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian oil refinery in Tuapse – and a massive subsequent blaze, releasing petrochemical products into the air.
Veniamin Kondratyev, Governor of the Krasnodar region, reported the fire at the Tuapse seaport, with debris from drones also damaging windows at a primary school, a nursery, a museum, a church, a block of flats and a gas pipeline. One man was reported to have been killed and another was injured.
Air Quality Concerns
Krasnodar region’s operational headquarters stated that “air quality measurements in different areas of the city” on Tuesday night had “benzene, xylene, and soot levels” which were “found to be two to three times higher than permissible limits.”
The Ministry of Natural Resources of the Krasnodar region also announced on Wednesday that experts would test the air for harmful substances in the town of Goryachy Klyuch following numerous reports of ‘black, acrid smoke from Tuapse’.
On Thursday, the operational HQ stated that “oil products that had previously spilled were quickly collected. Continuous monitoring is underway. <…> According to data for April 21, 22 and 23, there are no oil slicks or pollution in the waters near the port of Tuapse.”
It marks the second attack by Ukraine on the town of Tuapse this month, with the first attack on April 16.
