Colombian Congresswoman Cathy Juvinao, representing Bogotá and a member of the Green Alliance Party, found herself at the center of controversy during a parliamentary session.
While legislators deliberated crucial healthcare reforms, Juvinao was caught on camera vaping inside the chamber—where smoking and vaping are strictly forbidden.

The widely circulated video shows Juvinao using a yellow vape. Upon noticing the camera zooming in on her, she quickly tried to hide the device.
However, the visible smoke from her nose and mouth made the attempt futile, drawing even more attention to the incident.

Owning Up to the Misstep
Juvinao wasted no time addressing the backlash. She issued an apology on X, taking responsibility for her actions and expressing regret for her behavior in such an important setting.
“I apologize to the citizens for what happened yesterday in the plenary session,” she stated, acknowledging the poor example her actions had set.

Mixed Reactions from the Public and Politicians
The apology received mixed responses. While some social media users commended Juvinao’s swift acknowledgment of her mistake, others were less forgiving.
Criticism came from both the public and rival politicians, who highlighted the irony of her actions during a debate on health reform.

Representative Eduard Sarmiento also weighed in, referencing laws that ban vaping in public indoor spaces. “No cheap moralism, but the laws must be obeyed,” he emphasized on X.
The incident has underscored broader concerns about public conduct. Smoking and vaping are prohibited in government buildings across Colombia, including parliamentary chambers.
Additionally, legislation signed earlier this year by President Gustavo Petro aims to regulate the sale of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices nationwide.

While some may view the vaping episode as minor, it serves as a reminder of the responsibility public figures bear in modeling appropriate behavior. Juvinao’s public apology demonstrates accountability, a key step in rebuilding trust.
However, the divided reactions reveal that even sincere apologies may not be enough to immediately restore a damaged reputation.
