Granny’s got BOARD skills! – Chinese 65-year-old skater joins son and grandson for viral synchronised stunts

Three Generations Skate Together

Skateboarding has become a family affair in eastern China, where three generations are turning heads with synchronised tricks.

Footage filmed on Friday shows the family from Weihai, Shandong province, performing Bertlemann slides and G-Turns, weaving around obstacles and matching their moves indoors and outside.

“I think it strengthens communication across three generations. There’s an age gap – 65 minus 14, which is over 50 years. Skateboarding acts as a bond, giving us a shared language. That’s precious – parent-child, mother-son, grandparent-grandchild – all connected through this,” the son, Lin Chao, said.

His mother, Dong Zhiying, said skating with her grandson had become a particular joy.

“I feel truly happy skating at home. And my grandson is only 14 – he skates so well – I feel blessed,” she added.

Skateboarding Builds Bonds

Lin was the first to take up skateboarding, but the hobby soon became a family routine.

“I started when I was growing up and bought my own board, so I love it,” he said. “Slowly it has become a way to spend time together. For example, the three of us meet up every day to skate or go to the park, practise tricks together, and put in the effort to get that perfect synchronised shot.”

Their videos have since spread widely on Chinese social media, with viewers drawn to the unusual sight of three generations skating side by side.

“When the three of us go out together, it’s still rare in our small county – people are often surprised, especially seeing my mum at 60+ with white hair skating,” Lin said.

Age Is No Limit

Dong, who has been skateboarding for more than three years, says age is no reason to stay off the board.

“This sport doesn’t discriminate – young or old, if you have the confidence and the will, it’s never too late. I’m 65, and I want to skate. When I ride, the wind rushes past my ear – it’s a wonderful feeling,” she said.

Their sudden popularity follows a surge of interest in skateboarding in China. The sport made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games in 2021, while Chinese skateboarders have since gained an increasingly prominent presence in major national and international competitions.
