China Summit Plans
China is actively considering a summit between President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at November’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen, Seoul’s foreign ministry said after the two countries’ foreign ministers held talks in the South Korean capital on Wednesday.
Footage shows Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meeting his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, with officials from both sides present, as they called for a strategic vision and the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of bilateral ties.
Cho welcomed the recent improvement in ties, saying: “I hope that progress in restoring bilateral relations will contribute to peace and stability in the region, including on the Korean Peninsula.”
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Wang said China remained committed to playing a constructive role in promoting peace and stability, while also urging Seoul to pursue an independent foreign policy based on its own fundamental interests, saying South Korea should be able to develop relations with other countries in parallel without conflict.
The meeting took place five days before the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations on August 24, with both sides looking to build on a series of high-level exchanges.
Economic ties were also high on the agenda. Wang said the two economies had become closely integrated and pointed to artificial intelligence, the green transition, the digital economy, high-end equipment and the silver economy as areas for further growth.
Economic Cooperation Expands
Cho said South Korea would continue to uphold the one-China policy it has followed since diplomatic relations were established. He backed closer high-level exchanges and deeper cooperation in trade, technology, artificial intelligence and youth programmes.
Cho also called for faster progress in the second phase of the free trade negotiations and further development of the strategic cooperative partnership.
Xi last visited South Korea during the Gyeongju APEC summit late last year, before Lee made a state visit to China in January.
