Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said that on “two or three important matters, the views were far apart, and ultimately these discussions did not lead to an agreement,” commenting on the recent negotiations with the US in Islamabad.
“Diplomacy never ends. Diplomacy is always a tool for securing and safeguarding national interests, and diplomats must do their duty in all circumstances, whether in wartime or peacetime,” Baqaei underscored, speaking from Islamabad on Sunday.
“There are a few points to consider. First, this round of negotiations took place after forty-odd days, forty days of imposed war, and just a few days after the ceasefire, in an atmosphere filled not only with distrust but also with suspicion and ill feeling,” he persisted.
Baqaei also stated that the strikes launched by the US and Israel against Iran last year and recently made it “only natural that we never expected from the beginning to reach an agreement in a single session”.
“Another point to consider is the complexity of the subjects and the complexity of the conditions <…> such as the Strait of Hormuz or the region. These have their own conditions, characteristics, and requirements,” the official added.
He concluded by expressing gratitude for the mediation efforts of Pakistan.
