The first passenger train service between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has arrived in Pyongyang after a six-year break. This is a significant development as Beijing aims to strengthen cross-border infrastructure and restore ties with its neighbour.

Footage shows a passenger train at a station, with arriving travellers walking with suitcases. The passenger berths inside the train can also be seen.

Train K27 left Beijing Railway Station on Thursday at 09:00 a.m. and arrived in the North Korean capital at 06:07 p.m. on Friday, after a journey of 24 hours and 41 minutes. The train skirted the north of the Bohai Sea and stopped in the border city of Dandong, according to the Chinese railway authority.

China and the DPRK are ‘friendly neighbours’, and a cross-border passenger train service facilitates people-to-people exchanges, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson told reporters on Thursday.

The DPRK remains largely closed to foreign tourism, with limited exceptions mainly for Russian tour groups under restricted arrangements, according to travel agencies organising trips to the country.

The service linking the two capitals will reportedly operate four days a week in both directions, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
